About the Program
The W2C Home Life Transition Program supports combat veterans and their families who could use a place of healing, professional guidance, and support for the purpose of bonding mentally, emotionally, relationally and spiritually. Together they will build their communication skills to help retain their solid bonds. The retreat program offers service-members and their spouses a way to address the issues they face upon returning home.
The curriculum teaches couples how to communicate effectively, solve problems and manage conflicts without damaging closeness. The training is led by chaplains in comfortable, relaxing settings and will blend instruction with enjoyable, non-threatening practical exercises.
Veteran couples will share interactive learning experiences and build specific relational skill sets such as caring communications and conflict resolution skills that are critical tools for sustaining a successful relationship and addressing the unique needs of the children. Family wellness, couples communications, prevention and relationship enhancement skills building programs are incorporated into practical exercises. Topics include: solving problems as a family, making rules that work, building a common purpose, and defining their vision as a family unit. Thus, the entire family heals together and supports the process.
Through this marriage enrichment program, W2C will assist Pennsylvania service members and veterans, from all branches of service, strengthen their marital commitments and relationship skills as part of their post-deployment transition back into their local communities. W2C is focused on family healing and balance and targets prevention strategies versus damage control through health promotion; that is, modifying human behavior by providing psycho- education, therapy, and spiritual guidance. The program is provided at no cost to the service member or their family.
Chaplains and Counselors
The W2C Home Life Transition Program uses combat experienced Chaplains as facilitators who provide for an atmosphere of safety, an "I know where you are coming from" perspective and give caring, compassionate reassurance to all warriors and spouses. Mental Health Professionals and Peer Teams will also be present throughout the retreat to provide additional support to all the participants. The program provides an opportunity for participants to question "What is wrong with my relationship skills and how do I improve myself to overcome my unseen injuries." Spouses will be fully involved and will likely face similar realizations. Although not all Home Life Transition Program participants will suffer the symptoms of unseen wounds, such as PTSD or depression, this setting and curriculum will allow personal decisions to seek help more likely for those who do have these treatable health issues.
Providing this educational opportunity strengthens the family unit and enables resilience so that veteran couples can chart a realistic path together to stabilize their prospects and identify the value of family once again.
